Friday 11 September: Ex_Machina – Alex Garland, VK 2015
English with Dutch subtitles, 108 minutes
Young programmer Caleb is selected to participate in a cutting-edge experiment which brings him into contact with the intelligent robot Ava. Sensual, exciting and astute, with astounding acting and an unnerving soundtrack, Ex_Machina is simply one of the best pictures of 2015.
Caleb, a talented employee working at the world’s largest search engine company Bluebook, is invited by Nathan, Bluebook’s CEO, to join him for a week at his ultrasleek villa. Nathan wants him to participate in a test involving Ava, a sexy robot he developed in deepest secrecy.
Nathan’s dazzling home, hidden far away in the wilds, soon becomes a sultry hothouse of emotion. The mood soon changes when Nathan (played wonderfully by Oscar Isaac, of Inside Llewyn Davis fame) reveals himself to be a mad scientist of sorts, pulling Nathan ever deeper into a quagmire of ethical and moral questions.
